Evaluation

Silent Cities general branding brief is one of the projects I have really enjoyed tackling, and with it also been set by Paul Ward at The Workshop it has been a good learning curve.

Research was the big thing to line out first for this brief, I had no idea's wear to start with this brief, after looking into Silent Cities, what they do and who they've worked with. The main  thing i found is they wanted to be noticed by a wider range of people and be know for what they do. The Brief asked for something they could hand out at events for people to read and learn about them, therefor i decided to created VDAY which people can hold a charity event and there be a newspaper available every quarter for people to find out when the next events are on. The VDAY brand is for the people to brand their charity event and people will gradually learn what its all about from the newspaper.

Overall I am really pleased with how my final outcomes turned out, I believe they are what the brief was asking for and would be a great  way for people to learn more about the projects. I would have liked to illustrate the VDAY logo more, maybe made it more graphics based.

Advertisments

To advertise more I decided to produce a few ad-shells which could be placed around the city.

Also I have produced an advert for social media cites, mobile apps and for television, to help promote the city of Sheffield and what Silent Cities does.

Front page

Had trouble coming up with inspiration for the cover of the newspaper and really didn't know what to include or even highlight. So i decided to throw all the facts into one, drew a few layouts down on paper and decided the facts didn't have to make sense they were shocking enough in their on right. Kept the typeface the same and changed the weights and size, also created outlines for the numbers to link in with the inside of the newspaper.

Logo

Decided to go with a more illustrated logo, incorporating the Silent Cities logo, using the Memphis typeface and the same colour scheme as the Silent Cities logo. However think it needs more colour, more illustration.

Adding more illustration, coloured more think this will work better with the style of the newspaper I am going for a the look I hope to put across as more friendly/open to people.

Development

I have changed the sae of the newspaper, bigger would have more presence than a tall thinner page spread, the double page spreads will be printed on A3 and fold to A4 size newspaper.

A few developments on the page spreads. These are the double page spreads for the newspaper which is handed out at events which Silent Cites hold. used the same type faces through out to emphasise the hierarchy of type, Memphis for headers and Helvetica for the text. Each page is to show different events which ace gone on and new statistics which Silent Cities has discovered.

First page spreads

Decided on a news paper idea however don't want to make theme article look like a general newspaper, after all Silent Cities has a team of creative minds.

slightly too bottom heavy, needs hierarchy of type and information. type faces are the brand Memphis and for the body type helvetica light 12pt. quotes in the speech bubble in a serif typeface, Bitstream Carmina BT

logo ideas

My first ideas were on paper however they weren't putting across the message was hopping for, took them to screen and they were still looking dull and boring.

After a happy accident with fellow students, I realised the message to put across to the audience, was peace and equality, so I thinking about the peace sign everyone knows and can relate to. Decided an illustrated attempt would be more relating to the audience (more human).

Decided to re-draw the hand gesture to fit better with the text making it more flowing. Here I was trying different colours from the brand colours, and altering the illustration to be relatable.

Annual Reports

Looking at different Annual Reports, different examples and ways of creating an annual report, very minimal and clean with the main focus on main figures and names with other information at a lower hierarchy, still presented in a visually interesting way. I think with Silent Cities it will have main impact figures and headlines from papers with will be the main pieces and the hierarchy will be important.

Vow Of Silence

Participants of the I Am Silent campaign all over the world will be coming together in solidarity to stand in silence for the ones who have no voice at all. These gatherings will be happening in pre-selected locations in select cities. Will you speak out for them? www.iamsilent.com

These are pieces of information which is on the web site of 'Vow of Silence'. Really nice minimal typography, being blunt and to the point which is what Silent Cites needs.

Silent Cities annual reports

Silent Cities Annual Report, which show cases the people whom have helped charities with their volunteer case studies.

Minimal design with bright colours, and to the point which is what Silent Cites wants to do, don't want to bore people but want them to get the facts but still be visually stimulated so they remember the charity and what they do. Statement piece.

First Thoughts

After brain storming a few ideas and names, I like the idea of basing my idea on a British street party, when people had street parties in the 60's and 70's everyone knew their neighbours and people on their street, making it a community event , more relatable? Maybe a statement piece silent street party?
